There are two standard protocols for email; POP3 and IMAP. Most people use the older POP3 protocol, but the IMAP protocol is what WebMail uses, and has some advantages over POP3. Both POP3 and IMAP can optionally use Secure SSL connections, which MinkirriSite requires this when remotely fetching mail from another ISP.

POP3 Summary

  * email is downloaded onto your computer and deleted from minkirri

  * email fetched this way "disapears" from minkirri and is not viewable from any computer or WebMail.

  * email fetched this way can be read "offline" without being connected to minkirri.

IMAP Summary

  * mail is stored in folders on minkirri

  * email in IMAP folders will be viewable from any IMAP mail client, including other computers and WebMail.

  * Some clients can "syncronise" IMAP folders for offline reading, but generally IMAP is for reading online.

EmailClient Configuration

  You will need to specify POP or IMAP, specify minkirri.apana.org.au as you POP or IMAP server, and use your minkirri username and password. 

  If you connect to minkirri by dialup or wireless, the sending mail (SMTP) server setting should be minkirri.apana.org.au. You will not need secure SSL connections for POP3 or IMAP.

  If you have an internet connection with another ISP, you must use your ISP's sending mail server. You will need to turn on secure SSL connections for POP3 or IMAP.

POP3 Configuration

  Configuring Outlook Express for minkirri POP is done with the account configuration wizard using the settings mentioned above. After the wizard finishes, do the following;

  1. Select Outlook Express menus "Tools; Accounts; Mail"

  1. Select the minkirri account you created, the click "Properties"

  1. Select the Advanced Tab, and tick the "Incoming Mail (POP)" box for "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". **DO NOT** tick this for for "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)". Note this is not require for LocalUsers and DialupUsers, but is a good idea anyway.


IMAP Configuration

  The minkirri IMAP configuration is pretty standard with the following clarifications/exceptions;

  * The root folder path is "Mail". Note many EmailClient programs assume "" or "mail".

  * The sent items folder is "Sent". Note some EmailClient programs assume "Sent Items".

  * The drafts folder is "Drafts".

  Configuring Outlook Express for minkirri IMAP is done with the account configuration wizard using the settings mentioned above. Make sure you select IMAP instead of POP in the account configuration wizard. After the wizard finishes, do the following;

  1. Select Outlook Express menus "Tools; Accounts; Mail"

  1. Select the minkirri account you created, the click "Properties"

  1. Select the Advanced Tab, and tick the "Incoming Mail (IMAP)" box for "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". **DO NOT** tick this for for "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)". Note this is not require for LocalUsers and DialupUsers, but is a good idea anyway.

  1. Select the IMAP Tab, and change "Root Folder Path:" to "Mail", and "Sent Items path:" to "Sent".

Remote Mail Forwarding and Automatic Replies

  MinkirriSite email address can be configured to forward emails to another email address and/or send automatic replies. This can be done from the UserMin pages "here":https://minkirri.apana.org.au:20000/forward/. 

  Note that the Complex configuration mode allows more advanced things like feeding emails to programs etc, but it is probably best to stick to Simple mode unless you really know what you are doing.

Remote Mail Fetching

  MinkirriSite can be configured to automatically fetch emails from other email addresses that have POP or IMAP access. This can be done from the UserMin pages "here":https://minkirri.apana.org.au:20000/fetchmail/. 

  You will need to add a server and configure it the same way you would configure a EmailClient to read email from the other address. I would recommend using POP3 as the protocol. For the "local user" you should put your minkirri username. For "remote user" and "remote password" should be the username and password used to access your email on the other server.
