APANA Inc ========= APANA is the Australian Public Access Network Association, Incorporated, a not-for-profit on-line computer networking organisation incorporated in the State of Victoria as A0026600C and ARBN 081 355 722. APANA is a national association, operating as several separate Regions located all over Australia. A National Management Committee, elected by all members annually, coordinates the association's overall activities. Each Region has a Regional Committee, elected annually by the region's members, which coordinates the Region's operations. Regions are fairly autonomous and diverse, with different regions operating differently, with different services and fees. APANA membership is open to individuals and non-profit, non-government organisations. Access to the APANA network is available to members and their guests for personal, non-profit and non-commercial purposes. A member joins a particular Region, paying that Region's fees and receiving that Region's benefits. There are also provisions for forming new Regions. The Melbourne Region ==================== The Melbourne Region operates primarily as a central hub providing permanent, UUCP, and co-located Internet connections to member operated sites. Some sites also offer casual dial-up services, but this is not offered directly by the Melbourne Region. The hub runs all the services required and desired by the members who administer them on a voluntary basis. We currently have the usual web, mail, news, and proxy services, as well as substantial archive mirrors. APANA is not an Internet Service Provider, but a networking club. As such, it does not offer any guarantees of service. The levels of service are as good as the members are prepared to make them. Members are encouraged to volunteer as helpers to maintain the hub and ensure the levels of service are as good as they desire. Monthly meetings are held at the hub to plan and discuss things, and occasionally presentations on various topics of interest are given. As a club that administers its own network, members can experiment with networking at the hub and learn from each other. Ross House provides a central location in the city for the hub and additional facilities like meeting rooms. There is a variety of networking equipment and servers to play with, and a mixture of network connections to other organisations. APANA has many class C networks which are available to the Melbourne Region. The Melbourne Region can use these facilities for whatever the members are prepared to do themselves. Melbourne Region Fees ===================== The Melbourne Region charges the following fees for the various services we currently offer; Corporate Membership $120.00/year Individual Membership $ 30.00/year UUCP setup $ 10.00 UUCP fixed $ 10.00/month modem setup $ 50.00/line modem fixed $ 30.00/line/month ISDN DOV setup $100.00/64K ISDN DOV fixed $ 40.00/64K/month co-location setup $100.00 co-location fixed $ 40.00/month external volume 13.2c/MByte internal volume 8.8c/MByte All prices include GST. Membership is required for access to any other APANA services. Corporate Membership allows organisations to become members. Membership is billed annually. All other fees are billed quarterly. Volume charges do not apply for UUCP, unless fetched from an external connection. Traffic between member sites is not billed. Traffic through the hub proxy is billed as internal. Efficient use of the services provided by the hub can typically result in more than 50% of a site's traffic being internal. Single 64K ISDN DOV is a service that gives ISDN connections at normal PSTN modem prices. Multi-line PPP and 128K DOV services are not yet in active use, so there could be some delay and effort required in setting them up. For further information on DOV look at; http://www.traverse.com.au/ Remember, APANA is run by its members, for its members. If there is a service you are interested in that is not listed here, you are welcome to suggest it to the Melbourne Regional Committee and/or offer to support it yourself.
