+++ Software needed Most of the software needed is included with Windows9x, though there are many alternatives and addons that can be useful. A good place to start looking is; ftp://minkirri.apana.org.au/pub/win95 +++ Dialup Connection configuration Most of the configuration is done for you by using the internet connection wizard. This wizard will prompt you for information. At the appropriate place enter the following settings. dialup connection name : minkirri phone number : 93811630 username : password : server type : Windows95/NT PPP dialup server Default route/host : server assigned (203.12.237.9) Name server : server assigned (203.12.237.9) When in doubt, choose the defaults. Don't play around with the network settings in the control panel unless you know what you are doing, because you will almost certainly stuff things up. +++ Mail Reader configuration There are many different mail reader programs, each with different configuration menus. Mail on minkirri can use POP or IMAP for reading mail, and SMTP for sending mail. The important options to set are; SMTP server : minkirri.apana.org.au POP server : minkirri.apana.org.au IMAP server : minkirri.apana.org.au username : password : email address : @minkirri.apana.org.au The other way mail can be read off minkirri is by using your web browser and going to the url; http://minkirri.apana.org.au/imp/ +++News Reader configuration There is only one setting; SMTP server : minkirri.apana.org.au use the default port setting. +++ Web Browser proxy configuration When setting up a WWW browser, a bad configuration may not stop it working, but can make a big difference to the performance. This applies mainly to the configuration of proxies. The proxy settings to use are; http proxy: minkirri.apana.org.au port: 8080 secure proxy: minkirri.apana.org.au port: 8080 ftp proxy: minkirri.apana.org.au port: 8080 gopher proxy: minkirri.apana.org.au port: 8080 WAIS proxy: minkirri.apana.org.au port: 8080 no proxy on : minkirri.apana.org.au port: 80 Note that not all browsers will have all these proxy options, and some will have additional ones. Leave any additional proxy options at their defaults (usualy blank), particularly "socks". Internet Explorer offers a "use the same proxy server for all protocols" option that should be used. The "no proxy on" or "exceptions" part tells your browser not to go via the proxy if the information is on minkirri.apana.org.au. Obviously, since minkirri is your main proxy, there is no point in using the proxies for information found on minkirri. Note that some browers will require this field in the form "hostname:port", and others will only require a hostname.
