G'day Netcomm, We have a Netcomm roadster modem that was being used as a dialin modem on our Internet Public Access Site. In the time that it was being used for this purpose, we had several problems with it. Most users were able to connect OK, but in general the modem did not perform as reliably as the other modems we have (Maestro 33.6Kbps and Avtec 14.4Kbps). In particular one of our users never successfuly connected to this modem. This particular user has an Avtec Megamodem, which I understand to be a re-badged cheaper version of the Roadster. Other assorted modems connect OK to the Roadster, but the Megamodem does not. However, the Megamodem connects OK to our other modems. It is strange that the Megamodem->Roadster combination causes more problems than the Megamodem->Othermodem or Othermodem->Roadster combinations. Note that all modems involved were "AT&F&W"ed. When attempting to connect to the Roadster with the Megamodem, there is a distinctive sound to the negotiations that is absent from successful connections with other modems. The only way to discribe it is; "Wheeeeee, Whoooooo, Boink, Boink, Boink, Click", NO CARRIER. I have read somewhere (sorry, can't find it now) in a newsgroup that this noise is associated with some fax tone or another, and that this can be turned off with some (undocumented?) Roadster AT command. Unfortunatly we have not tried this, because I can't find the news article :-(. The details of the modems are; Netcomm Roadster 28.8K V34 Model No: AM3450 REN 1.0 Serial no: 519800498 ATI6 RC288DPi Rev 05BA ATI9 Roadster 288 V1.200-V34_DS-0.34 (C) NetComm Ltd. 1995 Avtec MegaModem 28.8K V34 Model No: unknown Serial No: unknown ATI6 unknown ATI9 Avtek MegaModem 288 V1.200-V34_DS-0.35 (C) NetComm Ltd. 1995 I understand that you have some sort of upgrade offer for the Roadsters to upgrade the firmware and bring them up to 33.6Kbps. Will this solve the problems we have been experiencing? Should the user of the Megamodem also get some sort of firmware upgrade? How do we go about getting the upgrade done? Thanks, ABO
