Shady's Tail, Er, Tale chapter 6 - Shady's Surprise

The two walked in complete silence until they got out of town at which time Shady pulled out the brown happyrock "Where is the Gold circle?"  The stone flared up and fired not a white light but a green one and went about 4 feet and vanished.  "What does that mean?"  He asked his friend.

"Beats me, I don't know anything about those rocks.  Maybe it couldn't find it."  he said ponderously.  "Forget it said that, it probably means something, we just need to find out what.  Why not ask it how we can get to where the circle is?"

Holding out the rock he asked "How do we get to where the Gold circle is." This time a white light shot out and went north.  Shady groaned "Back across the Divide?"  Lave looked no more pleased than Shady.  He wasn't looking forward to going through that maze again, evn with the brown rock to guide him.  "Lave, I don't see any other way around this."  His friend nodded in agreement and sighed.  Shady, put the rock away and his form began shimmering.

"Gary, what... what are you doing?"  his friend asked but recieved no answer instead a mental impression of the word ~wait~ appeared in his head.  So he waited and watched in shock as Shady grew out to a 25ft black dragon.  When he finished the transformation, he lowered a wing and signalled for Lave to climb on.  Lave stood there dumbfounded unsure of what to make of this turn of events.  Until he heard his friends voice in his head ~This is my true form, I had to look human so I wouldn't get the response that I'm getting now from you.~  Lave gazed up to this massive creature staring down at him and stuttered out "I've... been... traveling... with a dragon?"  Shady nodded and motioned for him to climb on.  Lave finally did, with a display of hesitation.  ~Also my name is Shadowing, not Gary, but I would prefer you called me Shady while I'm in this form.~

Once Lave was up Shady took to the skies following the path light took. Quickly catching up with it as well.  Passing over the Red Divide in a matter of seconds instead of hours ~Isn't this a lot better than walking in that damp dark cave?  Lave?~ He turned back to see his friend sort of green in the face.  ~Ugh, glad I didn't try to show off my stunt flying skills~ and he landed in the plains north of where he entered this world.  His friend quickly dismounted and was gasping for breath while Shady waited. "Sorry, I'm not used to flying"  ~Give it time, you'll grow to love it.~ They waited until Lave seemed calmed enough to get back on "Just one thing, fly low, please."  Shady laughed and agreed.  ~Wouldn't want you decorating the countryside with eggs and toast would we?~

Keeping low to the ground they followed the light, which had waited for them while Lave was resting.  It led them off the continent and further northward.  Shady began wondering just where it was taking them.  Unitl it finally stopped off at a small elongated island.  On the southern most point there was a large clearing while on the northernmost end there was a emense black castle.  Shady decided it would be best to land in the clearing and walk from there.  Almost as soon as he set down Lave was already back on the ground.  "No offense, but I do not like flying."  Shady changed back to human form and they looked further up the path.  The castle looms overhead erriely, like giant's silhouette.  "There is something very not right about this place."  They walked transfixed by the monstrosity that stood before them.
