Saga's peaceful sleep was not dreamlesss, of course.
Saga found himself standing on a wide set of battlements under the night
sky, filled with stars and the light of two moons.
"Nice night, isn't it?"
Saga turned and saw that the owner
of the voice was none other than General Xane, looking not as a ghost,
but as he was in life.
"Xane! what are you doing in my
head?"
"You know Saga, I think you've violated
one of the tenets of the code of the High Paladins."
"Which one?"
"Honesty. Not only to others, but
to yourself. I've seen you hide the pain that has been caused to you before,
and I sense the sadness you carry with you even now. Why couldn't you just
let it out?"
"To some it would be a show of weakness."
"Weakness! Emotions are not a weakness
but a basic cornerstone of the soul! Emotions are one of the things that
separate us as sentient beings! Our reason separates us from the animals
and our emotions are what separates us from machines. Are you a machine,
Saga?"
"No, but who would accept such a display?"
"That girl will. Her race is based
on benevolence and understanding towards others. She will not only accept
it, but help you through it. You can always trust her guidance. She will
never lead you astray. Which means, you really should eat more."
"*laughs* Thanks, old friend."
"Hey, what are friends for?"
With that, Saga awoke, finding Christi
waiting for him by the door. "Saga, we should go
get breakfast before the crowd gets there."
"All right, I'm coming."
Over breakfast, which Christi ordered
for him so Saga would get what he needed, Saga started a conversation.
"Christi, I'd like to get you over
to a medlab after breakfast."
"Why? Am I sick?"
"No, but I'd like to scry out possible
magical abilities. I have good reason to suspect that your wings aren't
the only things that you recieved from your experience."
"You mean, I might have innate magic
now?"
"Posssibly."
"Well then, let's not waste time!"
They headed over to the station medlab
and rented a room for this, and Saga wasted no time in his scrying. Results
came up immediately.
"Let's see, apparently your wings are
constantly charged with positive energy, which can be used to heal good
creatures and blow away demons and undead. You are now a transdimensional
creature, which means you can create dimensional rifts and can use them
as a form of transportation. You apparently absorbed most of the power
from the dimensional disturbance that got us into this mess, and you have
a hostile spell resistance of 99%. You can also cast out energy as an attack,
and your body is maintaining the high level of power that your body is
now host to. Could you hold this sword for a moment?"
"Um, sure."
As soon as Christi takes the 3-foot
long sword, it begins glowing bright white and crackling with powerful
energies.
"Hmm... The sword is now an Enchantment
Class 4 weapon with demon- and undead-slaying capabilities. You can keep
it, by the way. Your regeneration capabilities have skyrocketed as well.
In other words, you're loaded."
"Wow! I never thought this would
happen to me!"
"Trust me, I don't think anyone
could have predicted this."
Decker walks into the room, doing his best not
to be shocked by anything.
"Hey guys, you may want to pack
up. The repairs are almost complete, and we'll be moving out in a couple
of hours to go the the mercenary headquarters to get our transdimensional
component fixed. Be seeing you."
Saga and Christi quickly grabbed
their things and ran ou to the dock to board Decker's cruiser.
